Chelsea Handler Given Netflix Talkshow: "I Wanted To Sit With The Cool Kids"
The online streaming service has signed the 'Chelsea Lately' host for a new talkshow.
Chelsea Handler is to be given her own talkshow by Netflix after she leaves E!'s Chelsea Lately in August. The 39 year-old comedian and TV host will begin to host her new show in 2016, the online streaming service announced today. The move signals another landmark for the company as its first original talkshow.
"If I was going to continue working in this industry, I knew I had to do something outside the box to keep myself interested," Handler says in a statement. "I wanted to sit with the cool kids at lunch so I approached Netflix to make sure they were as cool as I thought they were, and when I confirmed my suspicions, like with any other future lover, I made my move.
"I'm more excited than I've been in a while, and the team at Netflix is the most forward thinking, alert group I've sat down with in ages. No offense to the Shahs of Sunset" she added.
Handler's seven year run at E! will come to a close on the 26th August when her last ever Chelsea Lately episode will air. It has been speculated that Handler's push to leave came from declining ratings and a general sense of discontent on the channel.
In March she told Howard Stern that the channel had become "a sad, sad place to live," adding, "They don't know what they're doing. They have no ideas. It's a failure."
Chelsea's Netflix deal will reportedly include a one-hour stand-up set based on Handler's Uganda Be Kidding Me tour to be made available in October this year She is also creating four "docu-comedy" specials for the network in 2015, exploring topics such as Nascar, politics, Silicon Valley and the NBA draft.
Finally, her talk show is set for an early 2016 premiere. Netflix said the show will have "an updated format that still encompasses Chelsea's unfiltered opinions on topical entertainment and cultural issues, as well as her signature guest interviews."
"The Internet has disrupted many of the conventions of traditional television and together with Chelsea Handler, Netflix is looking forward to re-imagining the late night talk show for the on-demand generation, starting with the late night part," said Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos, via Deadline.
