Cecily Strong Promoted to Weekend Update Duties on Saturday Night Live
Meyers thinks Strong is a great choice to replace him.
Late night sketch series Saturday Night Live carries on its shakeup as Cecily Strong – one of the most popular members of the show – jumps on the news desk to bring you a satirical take on the week’s events with Seth Meyers.
Strong is a strong choice, according to Meyers
Creator and current producer of the show, Lorne Michaels, had a pretty busy time remodelling the show with people coming & going, and a freshen up very much needed. But for him, Strong’s presence and talent bought her the step-up. “Cecily, from the first show, was right there,” he said. “She exploded.” (L.A Times)
With Meyers heading to Jimmy Fallon's job in February, Strong will join him before he departs. And considering the last three Weekend Updaters were Fallon, Tina Fey, and Amy Poehler, it’s fair to say this is a pretty monumental stepping stone for the talented comedian.
"For her to have the kind of season she had the year after [Kristen] Wiig left is that thing that makes you confident going into this next season of transition that there’s always someone who shows up and does things you’ve never seen anyone on the show do," Meyer said last month. "Her natural ability has kind of blown everybody away," he added. (Vulture)
Despite all the burgeoning talent on the show, it still has its haters. But Michael’s thinks that’s a generational thing, and people just need to let go of the past.
"People attach to the cast they see in high school,” he explained. “In those years they generally can’t drive. They don’t have any money. Staying up late is exciting. Being with friends up late is really exciting. So they’re very connected to the cast they see then."
