HBO's 'Boardwalk Empire' To Finish After Season 5

Boardwalk Empire will conclude with its fifth and final season, due to air on premium cable network HBO this fall. The move to bring the show to an end was revealed just this week, with The Hollywood Reporter confirming the news on Thursday, 9 January.

Boardwalk Empire has been consistently successful throughout its run

"It has been an incredible honor to bring this powerful and groundbreaking series to our subscribers," programming president Michael Lombardo said in a network statement (via THR). "Terry Winter has created one for the ages."

Terry Winter, the show's creator, will most likely continue to work for HBO following the series finale, continuing a successful partnership that began when Winter worked as a writer for The Sopranos. Winter, who is currently generating Oscar buzz for his adapted screenplay for The Wolf of Wall Street, has no publicly-known projects in the works to follow Boardwalk Empire with yet.

"We're thrilled to get the go-ahead for a fifth season of Boardwalk Empire," Winter told THR. "After much discussion with my creative team and HBO, we've decided to wrap up the series after such a great run and look forward to bringing it to a powerful and exciting conclusion."

The series has ended with mutual consent from both network and Winter, with it's end based on Winter's vision of the show and complies with how and when Winter wanted it to end. The closing of the acclaimed season will come as a blow to both the network and its cast and crew, who were continually praised for their performances and managed to earn the show eight Golden Globe nominations - with two wins in 2011 for Best Drama Series and Best Male Lead for Steve Buscemi - and around forty Primetime Emmy nominations - including a Supporting Actor win for Bobby Cannavale last year - since the show began in 2010.
