Billy Joel is set to break the record for most performances by any artist at legendary venue Madison Square Garden, with his upcoming 65th show on July 1st 2015.

The show will see the 'New York State Of Mind' singer break the record set by fellow piano aficionado Elton John. The record breaking performance will be part of Joel's 19 date residency at the famous New York venue.

Last year Grammy winner Joel was announced as the Garden’s first-ever music franchise performer. Tickets for the concerts, which will take place in May, June and July, went on sale today (November 22nd).

Joel is of course used to breaking records and receiving honours. On Wednesday Joel was honoured with the prestigious Gershwin Prize, which is awarded by the Library of Congress to composers and performers for their lifetime contribution to popular music.

In the star-studded concert held at the DAR Constitution Hall in Washington, the 65 year old’s career was celebrated by stars such as Tony Bennett, John Mellencamp, Boyz II Men, Gavin DeGraw, Josh Groban, Natalie Maines, LeAnn Rimes and Kevin Spacey.

Previous recipient Paul McCartney appeared in a video greeting during the event, along with Barbra Streisand and James Taylor who referred to Joel as "a national treasure.”

Speaking in a pre taped video Joel said he was "flabbergasted to be included in this group.” Adding "I haven't quite got my head around it yet.” The concert will air on PBS stations on January 2nd.
