Mars Needs Mom, R.I.P.D, 13th Warrior: The Forgotton Box Office Flops

You know that old saying ‘Money can’t buy you happiness’? Well it can’t buy a box office hit, either! You can pump millions of dollars into a movie, but it doesn’t guarantee it will be a success, take these box office flops for example.

Mars Needs MomsRemember 'Mars Needs Moms'

2011’s Mars Needs Moms had a production budget of $150,000,000, but only took $38,992,758 at the international box office giving it an estimated loss of $130,503,621. That would buy you around 7,676 Hermes Birkin bags or 652 Lamborghinis. So, essentially, it’s quite a substantial loss and we can't imagine that Walt Disney, who produced the movie, were too pleased.

We can’t see why Mars Needs Moms failed. It tells the story of 9 year old Milo who finally appreciates his family when he goes on a mission to rescue his mom who’s been abducted by aliens. What's not to like?

13th WarriorThe 13th Warrior

The 13th Warrior cost between $100,000,000-160,000,000 to make back in 1999, but only took $61,698,899 at the movie theaters. Antonio Banderas starred in the historical action film which was based on the novel Eaters of the Dead by Michael Crichton. The movie is loosely based on the Beowulf legend but clearly didn’t appeal to fans of the Anglo-Saxon epic poem. A more successful take on the tale, starring Ray Winstone as Beowulf, was released in 2007.

More: which movie was the biggest flop of 2013?

The Lone RangerJohnny Depp [R] and Armie Hammer [L] in 'The Lone Ranger'

Walt Disney’s The Lone Ranger starred Johnny Depp as Tonto, the narrator of the movie. While Depp and Disney have been a winning combination in the past working on Pirates of the Caribbean, with Depp appearing as Captain Jack Sparrow, they just couldn't work their magic on this one. The Lone Ranger sees Tonto relate his memories of fighting for justice in the American Old West. The movie came out in 2013 and cost $225-250,000,000 but made an estimated loss of between $94,748,943 and $119,748,943.

RIPDJeff Bridges [R] and Ryan Reynolds [L] in R.I.P.D

Coming in at number four in our list of box office bombs is another movie released in 2013. R.I.P.D. is a supernatural comedy, based on the Dark Horse Entertainment comic book Rest In Peace. The movie cost an estimated $130-154,000,000 to make but only took $78,324,220 at the box office, making a loss of around $90,837,890. Khloe Kardashian has just purchased Justin Bieber’s supersized mansion for $7,200,000 meaning that the estimates loss from R.I.P.D. could have bought her 11 more Bieber mansions.

John CarterTaylor Kitsch in Disney's 'John Carter'

Another Walt Disney flop scores fifth place. John Carter came out in 2012 and looked like Disney’s attempt to rival James Cameron’s Avatar. The movie cost Disney $250,000,000 to make but lost an estimated $108,610,950. With those losses in your pocket you could rent out the entire country of Lichtenstein for 1,551 nights.

Walt Disney makes three appearances in the top five biggest box office flips, why do you think that could be?
