'Better Call Saul' Set 6 Years Before 'Breaking Bad', Gus Fring to Return

Better Call Saul, the Breaking Bad spinoff show focused on Bob Oderkirk's character Saul Goodman, will be set six years before the events of Breaking Bad, creator Vince Gilligan has announced. During his appearance at the Television Critics Association's press tour, Gilligan also teased that fan favorite characters could return, though only if it "makes sense".

"If it makes sense we'll do it, if it doesn't make sense we won't," he replied when asked about the return of Walter White, in particular.

"I'd love to have him as a director, character wise, who knows? Maybe there's a way to do it."

Though fans will clearly be delighted with news of the story's timeframe and the subsequent possibility of Walter's return, it was another nugget of casting information that will most please Breaking Bad acolytes. Gilligan hinted that Giancarlo Esposito, or Gus Fring, will likely return for Better Call Saul.

"These are all characters we love and with Gus there is so much more to say about that character, and we certainly love Giancarlo," he continued.

"Having said that, we're trying to make something that stands on its own that has an entertainment value that's not just seeing a series of old favourites.

"It's not the series equivalent of a clip show. So we try to balance these things out.

"But I agree there's so much to be said about Gus - although in the series it always seemed to me that Saul didn't know Gus directly. He knew a guy who knew a guy."

Better Call Saul will track Jimmy McGill's transformation into criminal lawyer Saul Goodman, who would eventually get caught up in Walter White's path of destruction. The show has been pushed back to 2015, which Gilligan attributes to his "slow as mud" writing, though AMC has already green lit a second season.
