An Open World 'Arkham Knight' Set for Next Gen Consoles [Trailer]

Batman will find his way to consoles once more, and this time it’s the next generation. Arkham Knight is an open world game with a drivable Batmobile, and is the fourth game in the Arkham tetralogy, following on from Arkham Asylum, Arkham City and Arkham Origins.

“We’re excited to be developing the game for next gen platforms, which has allowed us to bring to life the design elements that we envisioned from the beginning such as the Batmobile and how it augments Batman’s abilities, to the fully detailed and realised Gotham City,” said director Sefton Hill.

British retail chain GAME revealed the news ostensibly by accident, with Game Informer originally supposed to be the first to announce the title. Most of the information in the various reports circling the Internet comes from GAME’s now-removed listing.

Game Informer’s official announcement confirms that the game is next gen only, that it is out this year; that it’s set one year after the events of Arkham City and that Batman is at ‘the peak of his powers’. Pre-order bonuses have been announced as well including, a playable Harley Quinn, four challenge maps, and more. Scarecrow is the major villain this time, with Penguin and Two-Face also confirmed to provide the requisite antagonism.

The game will be undoubtedly big for Warner Bros., who seem to be more inclined to making this into an annual franchise, with Montreal and Rocksteady taking it in turns to make each new release, a la Call of Duty with Infinity Ward and Treyarch. Despite Arkham Origins getting a lukewarm response from the critics, the first two games in the franchise – Asylum and City – were hugely popular, only adding to the anticipation of the latest entry set for next-gen consoles.
