Casting For 'Avatar' Sequels Is Go, With Zoe Saldana, Sam Worthington Signed On

“If something kind of works, they’ll just keep doing it until everybody hates it,” said Tina Fey at the Golden Globes this Sunday. Case in point: casting has begun for a second, third and fourth Avatar film.

Sam Worthington
Cameron is excited to work with the original cast again.

Last summer James Cameron enlisted the help of Josh Friedman, duo Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, and Shane Salerno to create the screenplays. Then Stephen Lang, who played Marine Colonel Quaritch in the 2009 film, became the first actor to sign on for the sequels. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Zoe Saldana and Sam Worthington, who played Neytiri and Jake Sully, respectively, have now also been officially announced to reprise their roles in all three sequels.

Zoe Saldana
Saldana's career has skyrocketed since her role in Avatar.

Other casting details are so far being kept under wraps, however as far as the story goes, THR reports that Sully and Neytiri now have kids. About the casting, James Cameron said: "Jake Sully is a rare combination of passion, strength, street smarts and soul, which requires a lot from an actor. Sam brought to the role a combination of sensitivity, vulnerability and strength. Zoe captured every aspect of the character I envisioned, bringing to Neytiri a mix of delicacy, fierceness and incredible physicality. I am beyond pleased they'll be returning with us to Pandora."

The films will be produced by Cameron himself, alongside Jon Landau, through their Lightstorm Entertainment company. The first release has been scheduled for December 2016, with the next two to follow in December 2017 and 2018.
