Say goodbye to Archie Andrews. The beloved comic strip hero is getting one last Farewell, before he gets written off “Life of Archie”. It’s a sad day for anyone who grew up with Archie, but at least our hero is getting a proper sendoff. Archie w

Archie will sacrifice himself to save a life in the July issue of the comic strip, Washington Post reports. Archie will get his last moment in the sun in issue No. 36, while 37 will skip ahead by one year to focus on the lives of his friends, Jughead, Betty, Veronica and Reggie honoring the legacy of their red-headed pal, who first appeared in comics in 1941.

According to Archie Comics publisher and CEO Jon Goldwater, the teary-eyed goodbye has been a long time comment. In fact, the comic books have been building up to this for about five years, he says. Ever since launching Life with Archie, which tells the story of grownup versions of Archie and the Riverdale gang. The life with Archie comic originally ran between 1958 and 1991. It was revived in 2010 as a magazine-sized comic devoted to stories that grew out of Archie Marries Veronica/Archie Marries Betty.

As for Archie, he will be revived at least one more time for a live-action movie. The project was announced back in 2013. While a concept for the film is yet to be announced, the involvement of writer Robert Aguirre-Sarcasa prompted speculation that Afterlife with Archie might be a strong option.

Afterlife is a big game-changer for Archie,” Aguirre-Sacasa said earlier this year in an interview for Comic Book Resources. “It has made us think, ‘Wow, should the Archie movie be an Afterlife movie?’ ‘Should Afterlife be a TV series?” We took a little bit of a beat to figure out, because whatever our first big thing is going to be, obviously that’s going to define the company in a major way. So we want to get it right.”
