Angelina Jolie kicked off the Oscar season as she was honoured at the 5th annual Governors Awards on Saturday night (Nov 16th).

The 38 year-old received the honorary Oscar for her charity work in humanitarian causes.

Jolie attended the star-studded event with her partner, Brad Pitt, and their son, Maddox.

Before receiving the award a short video was played, to the audience packed in the Grand Ballroom of the Hollywood and Highland Center, which featured several of her movies roles and highlighted her endless charity work.

Jolie was presented with the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award by George Lucas and in a very emotional speech the Hollywood actress paid tribute to her late mother, Brad Pitt and their children.

"My family, my love - your love and support make everything possible," she said to Pitt, who was proudly watching with Maddox by his side. "Mad, you and your brothers and sisters are my happiness and there is no greater honor than being your mom."

Whilst holding back the tears, Jolie then thanked her late mother (Marcheline Bertrand), "[My mother] was very clear that nothing would mean anything if you didn't lead a life of use to others," she said. "I didn't know what that meant for a long time."

"To stand here today means I did as she asked. And if she were alive, she'd be very proud."

Angeline also reflected on what her humanitarian work has taught her over the years, she explained, "I've learned what life is like for most people in this world. And how fortunate I was to have food to eat and a roof over my head, a safe place to live and the joy of having my family safe and healthy. And I have realized how sheltered I have been. And I was determined never to be that way again."

Congratulations Angie!
