Hardly a Christmas surprise for everyone, but Adam Sandler has been named the most overpaid actor again. Forbes compile the list based on the actor who earned the biggest salary for the smallest box office returns - which begs the question: why do studios keep giving Sandler a ton of cash to make a bad film that doesn't make any money?

Grown Ups 2Grown Ups 2 was actually a hit for Adam Sandler.

Anyway, according to this year's list, for every $1 that Sandler was paid to make these string of bad films, he brought in just $3.20. For the list, Forbes compared earning estimates from the Celebrity 100 list, which Sandler ranks high on owing to his commanding fees.

The comedy actor's latest movie, Grown Ups 2, was a hit and pulled in $246 million at the global box-office, though it couldn't help patch up the damage done by Jack and Jill and the awful That's My Boy.

Sandler was followed on the list by Johnny Depp, who, despite making a handful of half decent films and gaining general success at the box-office with the likes of Pirates of the Caribbean and Alice in Wonderland, has also made some dreadful failures (The Lone Ranger, Dark Shadows). For every $1 he was paid, Depp brought in just $4.10. Ben Stiller, Ryan Reynolds and Tom Hanks made up the rest of the Top 5.

Stiller, whose film Night at the Museum: Secrets of the Tomb opened this month, pulled in $4.80 for every dollar (Tower Heist and The Watch did not perform well), while Reynolds suffered for the flop R.I.P.D. Hanks pulled in $5.20 for every dollar, probably owing to the hugely expensive flop that was Cloud Atlas.

The list was made up almost entirely by male actors and only Sandra Bullock could break into the Top 10 for the actresses.
