Australian pop-rockers 5 Seconds Of Summer continue their relentless march to world domination as their self-titled debut album stormed to the top of the US Billboard charts. After one week the album already has the third highest sales figures of 2014 for a debut, and the fourth highest for any LP, with 253,000 copies shifted. Coldplay’s Ghost Stories has the highest one week figures with 383,000 copies sold.

5 Seconds of Summer

5 Seconds of Summer has also smashed the record for biggest sales by an Australian artist in the Soundscan era (since 1991, for you chart nerds). The previous record was held by the band themselves for their EP She Looks So Perfect which they set back in April with sales of 143,000.

The news adds to some already impressive worldwide sales figures for the album, which now totals over 1.5 million. The Australians are hardly unaccustomed to such enormous success. They’ve already reached no.1 on the iTunes charts for 76 different countries around the world, while sales of their singles in the US alone stand at over 2 million.

MORE: Are 5SOS the new 1D?

Back in Britain, 5SOS are gearing up for the release of the album’s third single ‘Amnesia’ on September 7th. On an album otherwise full of identikit, three minute pop missiles, the new single stands out from a mile off, characterised by radio-friendly strings and a slower rhythm. Lead singer Luke Hemmings said of 'Amnesia' “the song has so much meaning and it is one of the most heartfelt songs on the album and is really special to us as a band.”
