Nobody Knows If Wahlberg, Washington's '2 Guns' Is Great, or Terrible [Trailer]

Two crooked undercover cops partner up, unknowingly leading investigations on the other. Mark Wahlberg and Denzel Washington's latest movie 2 Guns has been made at least 20 times in the past. And if it hasn't, then it should have been. But it probably has.

Essentially, 2 Guns is a throwback to the 80s buddy cop comedies, though the adaptation of Steven Grant's book is a little darker. Washington and Wahlberg star as Bobby Trench and Marcus Stigman, who become embroiled in a dangerous war with drug kingpin (Edward James Olmos) whilst investigating each other.

During an interview with Screen Rant, Washington explained how he wasn't too fussed about the script and simply wanted to work with his pal Wahlberg. Shame it was 2 Guns Wahlberg and and not The Departed, or The Fighter Wahlberg, then.

"For me, we could have been mailmen, we could have been - whatever it was, it was the opportunity to work with Mark. Without being cliche, we're buddies. It's a buddy movie. So it was a chance to do that and have fun. I mean, I didn't do months of DEA research, let's just put it that way," said Washington.

Anyway, we're probably being unfair, because 2 Guns has courted some strong reviews, amongst a whole host of dismal ones.

"Goosed along by a pulpy Elmore Leonard vibe, 2 Guns is essentially a B movie classed up by its two A-list stars," said Chris Nashawaty of Entertainment Weekly.

"For a movie with so many dead bodies, there's still something strangely lively about "2 Guns" - a film which is certainly too much, and often too confusing, but never, ever too dull," wrote Stephen Whitty of the Newark Star-Ledger.

William Bibbiani of CraveOnline continued the praise, writing, "It's been a long time since I've seen a film as deliciously irresponsible as 2 Guns."

And then there was the bad.

"For each amusing exchange, there's a gratuitous scene that dampens the proceedings. One of the worst involves the torture of chickens," said Jocelyn Noveck of the Associated Press.

"On almost every level, 2 Guns is content to be as flavorless and forgettable as its title," wrote Ben Kenigsberg of the AV Club.

So there you have it, if you're fan of Four Brothers, Contraband, Broken City or even Pain & Gain, then you're probably going to enjoy 2 Guns. Fans of Washington may be let down.

2 Guns hits theaters on August 2, 2013.
