Semi-retired movie star Arnold Schwarzenegger marked the first anniversary of his announcement he'd be running for office in California by returning to the chat show where he shocked America.

Schwarzenegger announced his bid to challenge then-California Governor Gray Davis on pal Jay Leno's The Tonight Show on 6 August, 2003, and he returned on Friday (06AUG04) to thank the late-night TV presenter for his support.

Wearing a smart suit, shirt and tie, Schwarzenegger looked much more official than he did 12 months ago when he wore an open-necked shirt and a sports jacket.

Schwarzenegger told Leno he was thoroughly enjoying his new role as Governor, calling the past 12 months "the best year I've had in my entire life".
