Goodbye, Columbus Review

Excellent
There have been more than a few movies made about young adults at an impasse: The Graduate, Walking and Talking, and The Brothers McMullen quickly come to mind. Nobody ever talks about the underrated Goodbye, Columbus, but they should.

Based on Philip Roth's acclaimed novella, Columbus stars Richard Benjamin as Neal Klugman, a young Jewish slacker from the Bronx who is no particular hurry to become an adult. He appears headed toward a summer of idling his hours at his library job, until he meets pretty, patrician Brenda Potemkin (Ali MacGraw) at a posh upstate New York swim club. Almost on a whim, he asks her out. She accepts. What begins out of sociological curiosity quickly becomes a relationship, much to her parents' (Jack Klugman and Nan Martin) silver spoon chagrin.

Love With The Proper Stranger Review

OK
Quaint, old-fashioned, and overwrought, this minor classic from the early 1960s features McQueen as a pick-up musician and Wood as a still-living-at-home goodie-goodie who come together after a one-night stand, when Wood discovers she is pregnant with his baby. Managing to be both pro-abortion and pro-family values, Love with the Proper Stranger is hardly the highlight of either star's career, but it is a cute diversion.

Tucker: The Man And His Dream Review

Excellent
Francis Ford Coppola's labor of love... about Preston Tucker's labor of love. Jeff Bridges stars as the charismatic man who tried to take on Detroit (and lost badly) by making his own line of safe, fast, stylish, and efficient automobiles in the 1940s. Detroit retaliated, landing Tucker in a fraud lawsuit, and this is his story. Tucker: The Man and His Dream is shot with Coppola's signature stylishness, aided by fine performances from Bridges, Joan Allen, and Martin Landau. A few impatient ones may get bored with the attention to detail that Coppola has infused in his film, but Bridges' riviting performance should keep the rest of you glued to your set and longing for one of his rocketship cars.
