Classic Stephen King horror mini-series IT is set for a remake. SALEM'S LOT screenwriter Peter Filardi is reportedly reworking the script of the 1990 TV epic, which starred Tim Curry as a demonic clown. The original also starred John Ritter, Annette O'Toole and a young Seth Green. The mini-series, based on King's novel of the same name, follows the fortunes of seven kids fighting an evil clown, called Pennywise, in 1960s Maine.
Bizarre from frame one, the story tells of an ancient race of werewolf-like cat people, doomed to turn into black leopards (is that the same thing as a panther?) if they mate with humans. The only way to maintain human form, they say, is to mate with another cat person -- or, apparently, to devour a human in a lusty rage.

Smile charts the progress of a round of finals for the fictitious Young American Miss pageant being held in Santa Rosa, California. The civic force behind this event is a community-minded car salesman named Big Bob Freelander (Bruce Dern), a yokel with good intentions, an abiding optimism, and an inexhaustible reserve of clichéd bromides about the importance of a positive attitude. Brenda DiCarlo (Barbara Feldon) acts as pageant coordinator and den mother to the young contestants; her husband Andy's suicidal tendencies are exacerbated, rather than quelled, by all the forced goodwill she radiates and by the pageant's general, bright, can-do American vibe. Big Bob, especially, finds this mystifying - what on Earth is there to be blue about in a land of such copious opportunity and beautiful young women such as ours? - and the best advice he can muster for his desperate friend is to "go out there and have some fun."

Don't think I'm crazy... It's reverse psychology: it's not supposed to make sense.

Here's a quote from the "Here On Earth" press kit: "The lives of three young people -- a rich student, a girl from the 'wrong side of the tracks' and her boyfriend -- unexpectedly intersect during one fateful summer..." It's enough to make one's eyes roll like slot machines.
So imagine my surprise when this teenage romantic tear-jerker managed to overcome its connect-the-dots script, its paltry romantic chemistry and its endless parade of empty musical montage sequences to become affecting enough to make a whole row of college girls at the preview screening cry. OK, maybe I got a little misty, myself. But just don't tell anybody, will you?
The palatably promising Leelee Sobieski ("Deep Impact") stars as Samantha, daughter of a small town diner owner whose love life has since childhood involved only one boy -- Jasper (Josh Hartnett, "The Faculty"), a hot-headed dairy farmer's son in a John Deere cap.

Smallville, which stars Tom Welling as a young CLARK KENT struggling with the powers which will later make him SUPERMAN, will feature Kidder - who played Lois Lane in the films of the 1970s and 1980s - as an "emissary" to her old Superman co-star Christopher Reeve's DR SWANN character.
Kidder's character, BRIDGETTE CROSBY, will appear in the season opener and will even share scenes with Clark Kent's mother, played by Annette O'Toole. O'Toole played Clarke Kent's love interest LANA LANG in SUPERMAN 3.

Superstar Sting is so certain he won't pick up an OSCAR for YOU WILL BE MY AIN TRUE LOVE later this month (29FEB04) - he isn't going to bother writing an acceptance speech.
The British singer has been nominated for an ACADEMY AWARD for Best Original Song for the track from the COLD MOUNTAIN soundtrack and doesn't fancy his chances up against BENIOT CHAREST + SYLVIAN CHOMET, T BONE BURNETT + ELVIS COSTELLO, MICHAEL McKEAN + Annette O'Toole and Fran Walsh, HOWARD SHORE + Annie Lennox.
Sting says if he won, which would be a big if, he would "be spontaneous and say how wonderful I felt."19/02/2004 02:33
