Dust (2001) Review

Terrible
Here's a uniquely bad movie that combines not one unwatchable story, but two!

It begins when a punk kid breaks into an old woman's house. The old lady overpowers him, and forces him to listen to a story. She even ends up in a hospital, and the kid follows her there to keep hearing this damn story.

Intimate Strangers Review

Excellent
Seeking therapy is one thing; this is something else. What starts out as a therapy session gone wrong because of a mistaken door is really a study in purposeful cinematic misdirection to create a case of sexual intrigue capable of raising eyebrows in its country of origin. It's also the French answer to Steven Shainberg's 2002 adventure into obsession, Secretary.

William Faber (Fabrice Luchini) inherited his office and accounting practice in a staid Parisian building from his accountant father, carrying on a family occupation. Life for him is methodical, predictable, full of numbers -- which he enjoys enough to have made a career out of crunching them for a loyal clientele. Some people thrive on consistency and repetition.

Tous les Matins du Monde Review

Extraordinary
All the Mornings of the World (the translated title here) is not about a) mornings or b) the world. It is about music, and many feel it to be one of the better films about that nebulous, ephemeral subject.

Specifically, Mornings is the story of two composers, Sainte Colombe (Jean-Pierre Marielle) and his protege, Marin Marais (played by Gérard Depardieu as an older man and by his son Guillaume Depardieu for the bulk of the film). Sainte Colombe quickly earns a reputation as a master musician -- adding a seventh string to the viol, for example -- but his shunning of the king even more quickly earns him a place in rural exile. As Colobe's wife has died, he's dedicated himself to his hermitage, and more importantly his music.

Cyrano De Bergerac Review

Extraordinary
Edmond Rostand's 1898 play Cyrano de Bergerac is a definitive example of European romanticism: the truth is buried, beauty is found to be skin deep and virtue goes unrewarded.

After surviving Steve Martin's 1988 comedic translation, Roxanne, Cyrano has been resurrected for the screen again, this time in its native French. This latest version, is involving and depressing. See it alone, or go with someone you love who can cheer you up afterwards.
