Angelina Jolie has defended her admissions of lesbian sex and self-mutilation, insisting they serve to make her fans feel comfortable with their own habits and desires.

The Alexander actress, 29, is shocked her openness about her love affairs and teenage self-harming has courted so much "controversy" as her aim was always to help people and be "honest".

Twice-married Jolie says, "I was never looking for any kind of controversy.

"If I said I slept with a woman or talked about my sexuality, I meant it in a way that I thought was beautiful.

"And when I would admit to things like self-cutting, I wanted to be honest with people and try and help, and I was always surprised how it was taken."
