The first shots of Angelina Jolie as Disney villainess Maleficent have been revealed, with the star and newly celebrated director going back to her acting roots. Jolie is also the executive producer in the film, reports The Press Association, and she will be taking on the role of the Sleeping Beauty sorceress and looks suitably evil with a black headpiece and yellow contacts, cheekbones accentuated for greater impact.
Joining Jolie for the film are Elle Fanning, Sharlto Copley and Sam Riley on what is Robert Stromberg's directorial debut, whilst Imelda Staunton, Miranda Richardson, Juno Temple and Lesley Manville are also on board.
Talking to Entertainment Weekly, Jolie said she was enjoying playing the character "I'm having a lot of fun. I've already got my horns fitted. My kids are very happy," she said, going on to try and insist that there were some redeeming qualities to her character. "It sounds really crazy to say that there will be something that's good for young girls in this, because it sounds like you're saying they should be a villain. It's not anti-princess, but it's the first time they're looking at this epic woman [in a different way]. It's a really great script," she commented. The film isn't scheduled for release until 2014.
