Angelina Jolie and her fiance Brad Pitt have donated $50,000 (£31,250) to help buy tents for Syrian refugees.

The actress, who is a United Nations Goodwill Ambassador, is in the Middle East to highlight the plight of those who have escaped Syria amid ongoing fighting between rebels and President Bashar Hafez al-Assad's government forces.

On Wednesday night (05Dec12), she attended a meeting with border officers in neighbouring Jordan and heaped praise on the country's officials for welcoming in refugees.

She said, "The incredible compassion shown to these traumatised refugee families by the Jordanian border guards was extremely moving. Jordan has welcomed the refugees even though it has placed a huge burden on the country. The international community needs to show more solidarity and to support Jordan and the other countries in the region who continue to keep their borders open."

Jolie continued her trip on Thursday (06Dec12) by heading to a refugee camp in Jordan to meet families who had fled their homeland - and now it has emerged the star and her partner have handed over their own cash to help those in need.

A news article posted on the UN Refugee Agency's website reveals Jolie and Pitt donated $50,000 to put towards the purchase of family tents for displaced Syrians.
