Enigmatic British graffiti artist BANKSY netted GBP50,400 ($90,720) at an auction on Wednesday (18OCT06) for his striking Andy Warhol-inspired images of supermodel Kate Moss. The artist, who caused a stir this summer (05) when he cheekily reworked the cover of Paris Hilton's debut album PARIS to show her supposedly topless, impressed with his portrayal of Moss - which combines the model's face with the famous Marilyn Monroe lithograph by Warhol. He also raked in a GBP57,600 ($103,680) for his green stencil of the iconic Mona Lisa - in both cases doubling Banksy's previous record price of GBP21,000 ($37,800). A spokeswoman for London auction house Sotheby's says, "It's quite sensational to go over five times the low estimate. I believe Kate Moss was happy about Banksy using her image in an iconic way." This is not the first time Banksy has taken celebrities by storm - Angelina Jolie reportedly spent more than GBP200,000 ($360,000) on his edgy work at his Los Angeles exhibition last month (SEP06).
