A statue of fictional witch and BEWITCHED TV star ELIZABETH MONTGOMERY could be erected in Salem, Massachusettes - the site of the notorious 17th century witch trials.

Officials in the town are considering plans for the statue proposed by TV LAND, a cable network specialising in re-runs.

But the idea has attracted opposition from locals. JEAN HARRISON says, "It's insensitive to what happened in 1692. She was a fictional witch but the people who died were not witches."

TV Land has put up similar monuments in several locations, including OPIE and Andy Taylor from The Andy Griffith Show, Mary Richards from THE MARY TYLER MOORE SHOW, and RALPH KRAMDEN from The Honeymooners.
