For seven seasons now, 'The Walking Dead' has entertained audiences across the globe, telling a zombie apocalypse story like no other with an all-star leading cast consisting of Andrew Lincoln, Lennie James and Norman Reedus, amongst others.

Towards the end of 2016, the series delivered one of its most hard-hitting episodes with the season 7 premiere when fan-favourite characters Glenn (Steven Yeun) and Abraham (Michael Cudlitz) were killed off by the series' new Big Bad, Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan). [Spoiler Alert!] Fast-forward to today, and last night's finale saw yet another great character killed off, as Sasha (Sonequa Martin-Green) took her fate into her own hands and we saw her morph into a Walker right in front of our eyes.

The tragic events took place while the beginning of all out warfare was in motion, with those who thought they would forever be under oppression from Negan now rising up to go against him and his band of Saviours. It was an hour of television that finally put some smiles back on the faces of those watching.

So what should we expect when the series returns later this year for the eighth season? Showrunner Scott Gimple said while chatting to Chris Hardwick on 'The Talking Dead': "Every year, you ask me that question. I say it's going to be bigger. It's going to be more intense. I say these things and I've meant them every year, and I think we've actually accomplished that.

"This year, same thing. More intense. The first four episodes will melt people's minds and break their televisions."

Of course, those who have kept up with 'The Walking Dead' comic books will be familiar with the 'All Out War' story arc that we see coming to the small screen; there's a lot to get excited for.

Despite that, the upcoming events of the series aren't necessarily pre-determined by the events that have gone down in the comic book. Those working on the show haven't been afraid to switch things up in the past, and we'd be shocked if they did everything to the letter this time round.
