Rev Cotton Marcus (Fabian) has been a preacher since he was a little boy, following in the footsteps of his father (Wright) to hold his congregation in the palm of his hand and exorcise demons when necessary. But a crisis has undermined his faith, so he hires a TV crew (Bahr and Grimes) to document the the ridiculous trickery he uses to perform one final exorcism. But nothing about this possessed girl (Bell), her father (Herthum) or brother (Jones) is as expected. And Cotton starts to doubt that there's a logical explanation.

First off: It's a mockumentary. Don't start thinking Christopher Guest and Eugene Levy; think Remy Belvaux and Andre Bonzel's Man Bites Dog. Adrian (Adrian Martinez) has agreed to let a three-man crew to follow him as he orders, weds, and begins to live with a Chinese Mail order bride, in exchange for a little help with the cost. After three months of sending letters, Lichi (Eugenia Yuan) comes to America and weds Adrian. We start seeing subtle sadistic behavior in Adrian as he makes her watch his snake devour a mouse and then attempts to get her tubes tied... without telling her. Things get darker and flat-out creepy after that, and she begins to see the documentary's director Andrew (Andrew Gurland). They date and eventually get married too, and things start off well, but it's all downhill from there, and boy, do I mean it.

Last year's Slackers proved this was tepid comedy ground at best, and thankfully Cheats improves on the formula a tad thanks to its younger and more engaging cast. It's still the usual stuff: stealing tests, making crib sheets, bribing teachers' children, all with virtually no remorse -- stuff that was done impressively in Animal House and hasn't gone very far since. This is 2003, man! Where's the technology!?
