Despite middling to poor reviews, Sony's The Amazing Spider-Man 2 managed to pull in $92 million at the U.S box office over the weekend, taking its worldwide haul to near $370 million. Studio executives were probably beginning to sweat after the first batch of reviews, though the movie didn't disappoint at the box-office and exceeded expectations, despite falling well short of the $174 million taken by Iron Man 3 last year.

It's become somewhat of a tradition for the May-August summer box-office to open with a Marvel superhero picture. It's included the past two Spider-Man movies.

"It's just been stunning results across-the-board worldwide. We had only one day in China, and it's been a huge one (estimated at $10.4 million)," said Sony worldwide distribution topper Rory Bruer. "It's all going to add up nicely."

According to Variety, the latest movie - starring Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone - saw a notable surge in popularity on the West Coast, especially from Hispanic audiences. The movie also drew a sizeable 43% in 3-D, of which 9.3% was IMAX.

Spider-Man has every opportunity to retain the No.1 crown next weekend, though it faces competition from the Seth Rogen/Zac Efron comedy Neighbors, along with the animated Dorothy of Oz and Mom's Night Out. Our prediction is that Spider-Man will take a big fall, though will manage to hold off Neighbors, which should open pretty big.

At the wrong end of the box-office this weekend, the Elizabeth Banks starring 'Walk of Shame' lived up to its name to gross a dismal $38,000 from 51 locations. It cost $15 million to make.
