Did Technical Difficulties Fail Outkast During Reunion Gig At Coachella 2014?

Coachella Outkast Andre 3000 Big Boi

Outkast – aka Big Boi and Andre 3000 – reunited for the first time in 10 years at Coachella Saturday night. It was a pretty big deal. The set was broadcast live, so even those unlucky souls who couldn’t shell out for the festival/didn’t feel like traveling for hours to have the three dustiest, most exhausting days of their lives, got to see Outkast perform. The gig generated 90,000 tweets in 24 hours, and by Monday afternoon the recorded set had been viewed more than 1.7 million times, according to NPR.

Andre 3000
Andre's most recent endeavor was playing Jimi Hendrix in a biopic, to be released later this year.

There’s a lot of excitement in the air right now about the reunion, especially since Andre and Big Boi announced their 2014 festival tour. So far the tour includes 18 dates, with 40 gigs promised, but Outkast have made it clear that the reunion is not permanent. The duo are calling it a “victory lap” – a thank you to their loyal fans.

Andre 3000 As Jimi Hendrix In Biopic 'All Is By My Side'- Lacked Crucial Elements

Jimi Hendrix Andre 3000

The Toronto Film Festival has a very diverse movie list this year, but no film stands more alone than the biopic 'All Is By My Side', portraying the pre-fame years of Jimi Hendrix, one of the biggest rock 'n' roll icons ever.

The director, John Ridley, didn't follow the usual formula of previous biopic movies, he depicted a 23 year old Hendrix living in London (1966), at the time an unknown backup guitarist who had two turbulent relationships with Linda Keith and Kathy Etchingham, before his meteoric rise to fame.

Before leaving for the Toronto Film Festival, Ripley spoke with a small audience at an open air café in Los Angeles explaining why he continued to fight for this project, "This got to be a story I was so passionate about, I could not give it up," he also expressed the attraction of what he calls "the emotional velocity" of Hendrix's journey which was was not shared by executives, resulting in the film being shot as a small independent production.

Kendrick Lamar Bigs Himself Up, By Calling Out Other Rappers

Kendrick Lamar Andre 3000 Pusha T Drake

No one has ever called out as many people in one verse as Kendrick Lamar did in his contribution to Big Sean's new track, 'Control.' The song isn't even destined for an album but that hasn't made Lamar's fellow rappers, especially the ones name-dropped in his verse, zero in on the L.A rapmeister.

Rap doesn't really strike us as the genre where you want to be dissing your fellow words-men, especially due to all the tough characters with tattoes, grillz and heavy jewellery that could probably be swung like a flail if riled. Lamar doesn't seem to care though, spitting lyrics laden with big names in the industry in what feels like a taunt.

Andre 3000's Mother, Social Activist Sharon Benjamin-Hodo, Dies At 58

Andre 3000 Outkast

The mother of rapper and Outcast member Andre 3000, Sharon Benjamin-Hodo, died this Tuesday (May 28). The tragic news was announced by a representative for her son, real name Andre Lauren Benjamin, this Wednesday (May 29). The woman died peacefully in her sleep on the night of the 27th and is survived by her husband, Robert Hodo, as well as her son Andre.

Sharon was 52 at the time of her death, with the announcement providing no further details. During her lifetime, Sharon founded the The Starlight Camp, a program that supports underprivileged children. It is part of the New Morning Light Missionary Baptist Church in Conley, Georgia, whose pastor is her husband Robert.

The news of Benjamin-Hodo’s passing came right on the heels Andre’s 38th birthday, which the rapper celebrated on Monday (May 27). Unfortunately, he probably won’t have a lot of time to mourn, with his long list of upcoming engagements this year. He is one-half of the Grammy-winning hip-hop duo Outkast and has appeared in several films. He will play Jimi Hendrix in the biopic “All Is by My Side,” due out later in 2013.

Amy Winehouse's Father Continues Mitch-ing Session Against Beyonce And Andre 3000 Back To Black Cover

Beyonce Knowles Andre 3000 Amy Winehouse

Beyonce might have been on the wrong end of a tongue lashing from Amy Winehouse’s father, Mitch Winehouse, but it was nothing to the sort Andre 3000 received as Winehouse Sr once again tore into the cover of Back To Black that the pair had recorded for Baz Luhrmann movie, The Great Gatsby.

Previously, Winehouse had blasted Beyonce in The Daily Mail, saying that he hadn’t given her permission to use the song and that he didn’t think “she brings anything to it.” He added “They have got to pay for the privilege, which is what they are doing. I can’t tell you how much it is but it’s a lot of money.”

Now it’s Be’s collaborator, Outkast’s Andre 3000, who has ended up the wrong side of a Mitch-ing session. Apparently having heard Andre’s vocals on the track for the first time, Mitch took to Twitter to scathe “I just heard the Andre part of Back to Black. Terrible. He should have let Beyonce do it all. Mitch.” Oof. Thankfully for the pair, Mark Ronson – who worked with Amy on the original version of the song – has been rather more accepting of the new rendition, with MTV reporting that he told his East Village Radio show "I'm flattered and honored. I know Amy would be too." What do you think? Listen to both below.

Beyonce Knowles Andre 3000

Beyonce has teamed up with Andre 3000 for a rendition of the Amy Winehouse instant classic 'Back to Black,' with this track being the latest sample of the Great Gatsby soundtrack, with the song premiering on the record's original producer Mark Ronson's EastVillageRadio.com radio show this weekend.

The cover is the latest teaser to be dropped from the Jay-Z helmed soundtrack of Baz Luhrmann's adaptation of the F. Scott Fitzgerald novel, with such notable artists as Lana Del Rey, The xx, and Florence + The Machine also slated to appear on the soundtrack. Although Mark seemed relatively happy with the reworking of his song, one person who didn't seem to appreciate the cover was Amy's father, Mitch Winehouse, who took to Twitter shortly after the song was aired to vent his frustrations. Clearly unimpressed, Mitch wrote a scathing critique of Andre's delivery, writing "just heard the Andre part of Back to Black. Terrible. He should have let Beyonce do it all."

Andre 3000 Definitely Has No Debut Solo Project In The Making

Andre 3000 Outkast Big Boi Beyonce Knowles B.o.B T.I

Andre 3000 has no plans to release a solo album despite former Outkast buddy Big Boi working on his own new project.

The former duo member admits he has toyed with several music ideas but isn't dead set on releasing a solo debut any time soon. 'Things are kind of up in the air with me, and some days, I feel like yeah, I'll do it. Some days, I feel like, I don't', he told RollingStone.com. 'I record and I write ideas. I think I'll always do that... But I don't know if it will go to another artist or will it be my stuff or will it go to some movie? I don't know.' Three Stacks seems to have been happy to take a backseat in the music world in recent years, occasionally making guest appearances on other artists' tracks such as 'Party' by Beyonce, B.o.B's 'Play the Guitar' and, more recently, T.I.'s 'Sorry'. 'My whole motivation is, I don't want to mess these people's songs up, more than anything than let me do something great', he said on the subject.

His OutKast partner Big Boi, however, is now promoting his new solo album 'Vicious Lies and Dangerous Rumors' but admits that Andre hasn't made a guest appearance on that project despite rumours, joking that he's too busy shooting commercials for Gillette hair trimmers. 3K wasn't even aware that there were rumors of a reunion. 'I don't read the Internet. I've never had a Twitter, I've never had a Facebook', he insisted. 'None of that kind of stuff, because it makes me mad to read it sometimes. I just don't. I don't hear all the rumors.'

Rumors Of Outkast Rift Are Vicious Lies Says Big Boi, Ahead Of New Album

Big Boi Outkast Andre 3000

Big Boi dropped into MTV Rapfix recently to play down rumors of beef between he and his Outkast band mate Andre 3000, whilst at the same time drawing a line under answering any further questions about whether the legendary rap duo might get back together.

Reports of friction between the two not-always-close pals surfaced again after a recent interview saw Big Boi say that Andre isn’t on his new album Vicious Lies And Dangerous Rumours because he’d rather be off shooting razor commercials. However, Big Boi insists that he was just joking. "I was being sarcastic and they took it and ran with it," he told MTV. "It was a vicious misunderstanding, how my man ain't gonna be on my album to do a shaving commercial? Get the f--- outta here."

So things are fine then? "Yeah, for sure, we're good. That's my brother, man. Y'all don't see us. We do us," he said. "So people want an Outkast album so bad they'll stir up somethin' but you can't break that bond." It’s been six years though since the pair’s last album Idlewild, and people are asking when the next will be. Too many people as it turns out. "I ain't gonna answer no more Outkast questions... after today, that's it. This the last one," Big Boi finished. "Until you see me and Dre sit side by side... when you see both of us together then you'll know it's coming."
