More than 31 million viewers tuned into the finale of American Idol to see
19-year-old Fantasia Barrino win the contest.
American network Fox charged advertisers a staggering $1 million
(GBP550,000) for a 30 second commercial slot in the pop talent show.
However the viewing figures were down by 18 per cent compared to last
year's final in which Ruben Studdard won the public vote.
But they were still enough to make the show the third-biggest non-sports
television event this year - after the Friends final (51.1 million) and the
Academy Awards (43.5 million).
