The season nine finalist released a festive song at the end of last year (13), called Coming Out for Christmas, to raise awareness about lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youths and now she reveals why the tune was so important to her.
Coming out during an appearance on U.S. breakfast show Good Day L.A., Bowersox admitted she has been bisexual "for as long as I can remember."
The 28 year old now tells entertainment site GregInHollywood.com, "The more people who come out who are in the public eye, the better chance some high school student has to love and accept themselves.
"I think 40 per cent of the youth homeless population is Lgbtq (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer) and it’s simply because they’re not accepted by their families. They’re kicked out of their homes, they feel shame and guilt."
Bowersox has donated proceeds from downloads of her festive tune to the Trevor Project, an organisation which provides suicide prevention services to Lgbtq youth.
Bowersox, who has a five-year-old son from a previous marriage, split from husband Brian Walker in May (13).
