Last night's American Idol was full of surprises (May 23, 2012). And we're not just talking about the fact that Phillip Phillips stormed home to victory, clutching the title from the grasp of Jessica Sanchez. The Associated Press have reported that two former Idol contestants got engaged onstage during the season finale.
Ace Young, who was a contestant during season five (if you don't remember him, that could be because we have just finished season eleven. and it's not like he was the winner.) chatted to Ryan Seacrest onstage, along with his girlfriend Diana DeGarmo, who was a runner-up in season three. He told Ryan that he and Diana had just moved in together and promptly got down on one knee and proposed to her. Clearly emotional, a tearful Diana accepted the proposal with a nod. Perhaps the producers of American Idol need to think about incorporating a dating element into the show to spice things up a bit and boost those viewer ratings?
Phillip Phillips may have seemed like the underdog for last night's finale, pitched, as he was, against the power-house of Jessica Sanchez. The public felt for his understated charm, though and his renditions of Ben E King and Billy Joel were enough to convince viewers that he was more worthy of the title than Jessica and her impressive vocal range. He remained his usual nonplussed self until it was time for his final performance. Phillips became uncharacteristically emotional, stopping the song half way through and collapsing into the arms of his family.
