Keith Michaels once had it all; recognition and money from an award-winning screenplay and an attractive wife to share it with. However, now he's nearing middle-age and he no longer seems to have any of it. Desperate to make ends meet, the agent offers him last resort; there's a teaching post vacancy at a small town university in Binghamton, available to teachers in screenwriting. With a Golden Globe hit under his belt, he's a sure-fire candidate for the job - but it's the last thing he wants to do. However, he soon finds the silver lining in that a string of attractive young students have applied to enrol on his course and he uses the opportunity to revel amongst young women, while doing as little work as possible. The stars stepped out onto the red carpet for one of the glitziest ceremonies of awards season: the Creative Primetime Emmys.
Having previously won for NBC's political drama 'The West Wing' as White House press secretary C.J. Cregg, Allison Janney’s award for outstanding guest actress in a drama series for her role in Masters of Sex, which also stars Michael Sheen and Lizzy Caplan, was a particular highlight.
Backstage, Janney highlighted that playing Margeret Scully was certainly challenging at times. "I felt that Margaret Scully challenged me in ways that I've never been challenged before as an actress on so many levels - on an emotional level, on a physical level - and having to do sex scenes was extraordinarily nerve-wracking and stressful for me and something that I didn't think I'd have to do at this age, frankly," she explained.

After a couple of gimmicky transgressive comedies (Humpday and Your Sister's Sister), writer-director Lynn Shelton takes a more observant approach this time. So even if, as before, the script never quite fills in the gaps in the story, it at least knowingly recreates relational awkwardness in a remarkably sensitive way. And the characters are almost eerily easy to identify with.
The centre of the story is Abby (Rosemarie DeWitt), who is debating whether she should move in with her rebound boyfriend (Scoot McNairy). This sparks her to think about her whole life, and she ends up recoiling at the idea of touching human flesh. Which is a problem since she's a massage therapist. By contrast, her dentist brother Paul (Josh Pais) believes he might have the ability to heal his patients, so he consults Abby's reiki-practitioner colleague (Alison Janney) for advice. Meanwhile, Paul's daughter Jenny (Ellen Page) is terrified to tell her father that she hates working as his assistant. And she's even more afraid to admit that she has a crush on her aunt's boyfriend.
Along the way, Abby, Paul and Jenny are all pushed into a turning point in their lives by an unexpected change in circumstances, which of course feels a bit contrived. But the film's real strength is in the messy connection between family members who have issues with themselves and each other, all of which are expressed through clumsy conversations and uncomfortable physicality. As insecure siblings, DeWitt and Pais are terrific in complex roles that draw on the actors' nervous energy. But only Pais and McNairy are genuinely likeable: men who haven't a clue what to do. By contrast, the always terrific Page and Janney have much less-developed roles.

Tammy's life seems to have just become an unfortunate string of events having been dismissed from her job at fast food joint Toppy Jacks and discovered that her husband has been having an affair with the neighbour. Now penniless and virtually homeless, Tammy decides to set out on a road trip to Niagara Falls. Her mother down the street refuses to lend her the car, however, and she is forced to beg a favour from her diabetic but resolutely alcoholic grandmother Pearl. Unfortunately for Tammy, Pearl wants to come along for the ride, and after finding out that Pearl has enough money to provide for them both on the way, Tammy accepts - even if it means becoming her grandmother's personal carer. It's by no means a smooth ride, with Pearl getting arrested and Tammy trying to rob a Toppy Jacks, but it could change both their lives forever.

With a constant barrage of hilarious visual and verbal gags, this riotous animated adventure might entertain adults more than kids. Although youngsters will enjoy the whizzy pace and manic 3D animation. Based on one of Jay Ward's anarchic 1960s creations (see also Rocky & Bullwinkle), it's a relentless onslaught of jokes and puns, with a hint of educational value thrown in for good measure.
After a lonely puppyhood, the intelligent dog Peabody (voiced by Burrell) studied to become a globally acclaimed artist, sportsman and inventor, eventually adopting a human boy, Sherman (Charles), as his son. But now it's time for Sherman to start school, which isn't easy when you're a genius with a dog as your dad. Sure enough, mean girl Penny (Winter) mercilessly bullies him while Child Services officer Mrs Grunion (Janney) plots to have him taken into care. So Peabody invites Penny's parents (Colbert and Mann) and Grunion over to sort things out. But in an effort to impress her, Sherman shows Penny the Way Back time machine he and Peabody use to explore history. And Penny decides to stay in Ancient Egypt.
The movie barely pauses for breath, racing from the Pyramids to Renaissance Italy for an adventure with Da Vinci (Tucci), then on to the Trojan War and Agamemnon (Warburton). At every step, the script gleefully subverts history with goofy slapstick, poo jokes, movie references and absurd touches that come out of nowhere. It's a remarkably intelligent approach to kids' comedy, and even if the chaos sometimes feels exhausting, it's so funny we don't really mind. And the energetic plotting will delight children as much as the rather surreal idea of having a dog as a dad.

After spectacularly losing a local spelling bee as a youngster, the now 40-year-old Guy Trilby is determined to go back and change it. Having developed his spelling ability substantially over the decades, he decides to enter the National Quill Spelling Bee after discovering a loophole which states that anyone past the 8th grade cannot compete. Having given up on academic achievement before he passed 8th grade, the contest's judges struggle to deny him the opportunity to compete despite arrant fury from parents of potential winners who believe that his age now gives him an advantage. Initially rude and insulting towards his pre-pubescent competitors, he soon starts to develop a friendship with Chaitainya; an enthusiastic young boy with no friends who Guy takes under his wing. However, not everyone's happy with what Guy ends up teaching Chaitainya about the world.

Mr. Peabody is doubtlessly the most intelligent and most accomplished dog on the planet, and undeniably outshines the human race too. However, despite his achievements, he is determined to maintain a normal life for his adopted human son Sherman by inviting round Penny a classmate of his with whom he wants Sherman to be friends. She has other ideas, however, and only shows interest when Sherman agrees to show her Mr. Peabody's WABAC - a time machine in which they travel into the past despite being expressly forbidden. When Peabody finds out, he realises that their actions have ripped a hole in the space-time continuum and they are forced to return to the past to re-write history and save the universe. Along the way they meet some of the biggest legends of history, including Leonardo Da Vinci and Sigmund Freud, who help them on their quest.
'Mr. Peabody & Sherman' is a brilliantly funny animated movie based on the characters from the 'The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show' in the sixties in the 'Peabody's Improbable History' segments. It has been directed by Rob Minkoff ('The Lion King', 'Stuart Little', 'The Haunted Mansion') and written by Ted Key ('Hazel', 'The Million Dollar Duck', 'Gus') and Craig Wright ('Dirty Sexy Money', 'Underemployed'). 'Mr. Peabody & Sherman' is set for release in the UK on February 7th 2014.
An especially strong script gives actors plenty to chew on in this comedy-drama, in which writer-directors Faxon and Rash (The Descendants) take an observant look at the awkward connections we make with each other. Using sparky humour and emotion, the filmmakers and cast create vivid characters we can't help but identify with, even when they do all the wrong things.
At the centre, Duncan (James) is a 14-year-old who dreads spending the summer at a beach house owned by Trent (Carrel), the cruelly critical new boyfriend of his mother Pam (Collette). When they arrive, they meet gossipy neighbour Betty (Janney), who has a whole season of neighbourhood parties planned. And her daughter Susanna (Robb) looks just about as miserable as Duncan does. As he tries to escape, Duncan finds a local water park run by colourful misfit Owen (Rockwell), who takes Duncan under his wing and offers him a summer job. And being on his own gives him the badly needed self-confidence to talk to his mother honestly, take on Trent and maybe even ask Susanna out on a date.
Even though this is essentially a standard coming-of-age movie, the script never falls into the usual cliches. For example, when Duncan's first kiss comes along, it plays out in an unexpected, realistic way. This is a generous, honest comedy packed with terrific characters and resonant situations. Supported by the all-star cast, James delivers an impressive performance as a sullen teen struggling to face the world around him , growing up while remaining awkward and likeable. Meanwhile, Stockwell keeps us laughing with a lively party-boy turn that's underscored with sympathy. Collette beautifully layers the repressive, conflicted Pam. Carell goes nicely against type as the cruelly passive-aggressive Trent. And Janney steals the show with the most hilarious lines.

Justin Long will star in Mom, a new CBS comedy series. The actor will play the love interest of the central character, played by Anna Faris.
CBS' comedy Mom has added Justin Long to its cast. Chuck Lorre made the announcement at a promotional event for the series. He told the gathered press Octavia Spencer would also be making a guest appearance in an early episode.

Chuck Lorre, the executive producer and creator of the comedy, announced Long would be involved in the project. He will star opposite Anna Faris and act as her love interest. Faris, playing Christy, is the 'Mom' in question. She is a recovering alcoholic who decides to relocate with her children to the Napa Valley, California.

The Way Way Back – a light, heart-warming comedy in the midst of an action-packed summer blockbuster season, saw its world premiere last month. The film hits US theatres (as a limited release) tomorrow, June 5th and there are already a number of opinions from critics floating around the internet.

'American Beauty''s Allison Janney has revealed that she is currently looking forward to a date with a man she shared her first kiss with - around four decades ago.
Five-time Emmy Award-winning Allison Janney is hoping that a date with the man who gave her her first kiss will blossom into a rekindled romance. This comes after splitting up with actor Richard Jenik in 2006 led to her going through a long dry-spell. In 2012, she revealed that she was thinking of trying her hand at online dating in a final attempt to find her 'soul mate'.
Furthermore, Janney has revealed that she recently reconnected with her first teenage boyfriend and the couple have planned to meet up sometime. The 53-year-old actress still remembers the time they shared their first kiss and now can't wait to meet again. She explained the encounter from many years ago to 'New York Daily News', saying: "I was 13 or 14. It was a really good French kiss. It was my first French kiss on the beach and it was fantastic. We only had that summer. We lived in different states. It was pretty magical... I know where he is. We're supposed to go on a hike soon."
Abby is a particularly well-rated massage therapist who enjoys living life to the fullest while her quiet and correct brother Paul is the opposite with his failing dental practise and an awkward teenage daughter to look after. Abby needs a new place to live and when her boyfriend offers her a home at his place, things start to get complicated for her. On a regular day at work, she finds herself unable to face her new client having developed a phobia of skin-to-skin contact which not only puts her career in the gutter, but also drastically affects her relationship with her boyfriend. Meanwhile, her niece Jenny develops a crush on him and attempts to seduce him despite his love for Abby. Paul's life has also taken a dramatic change after a patient claimed that Paul's healing hands cured his toothache, leading to a much fuller waiting room at his surgery. But will his new found magic touch help Abby regain her life back?
'Touchy Feely' is the hearting-tugging drama about the unpredictability of our futures and the importance of family support. Directed and written by Lynn Shelton ('My Effortless Brilliance', Humpday', 'Your Sister's Sister'), it's a movie that will see a few laughs, a few sighs and definitely a few tears.

Duncan is a 14-year-old boy struggling to fit in anywhere and dealing with all the problems that most teenagers are forced to deal with at some stage. He also meets the unprofessional and extroverted manager of the Water Wizz water park, Owen, who offers him a job and some excitement on his otherwise uninteresting vacation and subsequently helps him grow in confidence and self-belief.

Marlin is a clown fish with deep anxiety issues who lives alone with his sheltered son Nemo who has just started school. His over-protectiveness coupled with peer pressure soon drives Nemo to become a little more daring, however, and he ends up being captured and taken all the way to Sydney. Determined not to lose his beloved son, Marlin sets out on a death-defying adventure with a Blue Tang fish called Dory who suffers from short term memory loss. With danger at every turn, Marlin braves the open ocean and discovers a sense of courage and self-worth he never knew he had.
'Finding Nemo' was directed by Oscar winners Andrew Stanton ('WALL-E', 'John Carter') and Lee Unkrich ('Monsters, Inc. ', 'Toy Story 2') and written by Bob Peterson ('Up') and David Reynolds (additional writer for 'A Bug's Life'). It became both a commercial and critical success on its release through Pixar in 2003 grossing $921,743,261 worldwide and was nominated for two BAFTAs and a Golden Globe and won an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. It was this major appeal that has prompted a re-release in stunning 3D almost ten years later. 'Finding Nemo 3D' will hit cinemas on March 29th 2013.

There's plenty of potential for jagged black humour in this suburban comedy-drama, but the filmmakers never take a single risk. So with its soft and simplistic approach, the movie is never as quirky or hilarious as it should have been, or as the filmmakers seem to think it is. The only pleasure in watching it comes through understated touches the gifted cast members manage to inject here and there. And what a great cast!
It's set in West Orange, New Jersey, where two families have been best friends for decades. David and Paige Walling (Laurie and Keener) have two grown children: Vanessa (Shawkat) lives at home while Toby (Brody) drops in to visit every now and then. Across the street are the Ostroffs, Terry and Carol (Platt and Janney), whose wayward daughter Nina (Meester) is home for Thanksgiving. Everyone thinks a romance between Toby and Nina would be wonderful. But as the Wallings try to work out some marital problems, it's David who drifts into a transgressive affair with Nina. Which sends these long-time friendships into spiralling chaos.
The plot is so perfectly suited to a black comedy that we wonder what happened along the way. Director Farino smooths every edge, instead straining for silly farce that leads to some sort of emotional catharsis. But he fails to recognise that these people are all intelligent adults, so the fallout from David and Nina's fling feels contrived and obvious. The script also never makes us feel like they are doing anything besides reacting to their previous relationships: this isn't real love, so why should we care?

Based on P.G. Wodehouse's novel, the film concerns the exploits of one Jim Crocker (Sam Rockwell), a young wastrel whose social-climbing American mother (Allison Janney, sharp as a tack) has forced him and his father (Tom Wilkinson), a failed British actor, to live in London and try and impress the swells there. She does this just to tick off her competitive sister, Nesta (Brenda Blethyn), a fact not wasted on the men of the family. Spoiling his mother's plans is Jim's penchant to booze it up all over town, getting into fistfights and leaving flappers scattered about the house and in his bed. Jim decides to ostensibly reform his wayward ways when he meets Nesta's step-niece Anne (Frances O'Connor), who won't have anything to do with him unless he pretends to be someone else - Jim once wrote a gossip column under the name "Piccadilly Jim", and once someone else writing the column (he hasn't worked on it for years) gave a negative review to a collection of Anne's poems. Jim thusly does the only sensible thing a fellow could do: He pretends to be a teetotaler Christian named Algernon Bayliss. Somehow, along the way, a German spy and some scientific secrets come into play, but one would be well-served to not wonder how.

Every time I see a new Kevin Spacey movie, I expect the world from him, and every time he delivers the galaxy.
Arguably the greatest actor currently working in motion pictures, he is capable of putting across leagues of depth with the subtlest, most insignificant glance. He can play menacing or meek, ardent or indifferent, nervous or non-nonchalant with equal dexterity.
Look at "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil," "The Negotiator," "L.A. Confidential," "The Usual Suspects" or any of his recent roles and just try to imagine another actor in the part. It simply can't be done. Spacey doesn't act, he embodies his characters viscerally from the inside out.

Leaning hard into ham-fisted mockery of beauty pageants and Midwesterners, "Drop Dead Gorgeous" is an exercise in frustration.
It's frustrating because this mocumentary condemnation of the objectification of teenage girls is ripe with thick, delicious layers of irony, but director Michael Patrick Jann -- whose background is in sketch comedy -- allows that irony to be beaten to death by cheap, madcap overacting.
Following two frontrunners in the fictional American Teen Princess Pageant, "Gorgeous" applies its comedy with all the precision of a paint roller. Wide swaths of disposable laughs come from parading the absurdly varied and one-dimensional contestants before the camera. There's a showtune freak with a drag queen brother, a fat chick, an American girl adopted by Japanese immigrants, a brainiac who wants to do a Shakespeare soliloquy in the talent competition, an interpretive dancer and a soccer dyke -- whose death in a farming accident sets up the plot, revolving around how far one girl might go to win.

There's just no excuse for making a Shakespeare knock-off with "Savedby the Bell" quality dialogue. When a movie modernizes The Bard, evenif it's set it in a high school, the chief obligation is to dialogue aboveall else.
"10 Things I Hate About You" -- a "Clueless"-spawnremake of "The Taming of the Shrew" -- while an above averageentry in the recent pool of teen-targeted pics, is sorely lacking in thisarena.
Penned by two office temps-cum-screenwriters and directedby a feature film rookie (Gil Junger) as well, "10 Things" isa bright idea (I'm always an advocate of fiddling with Shakespeare), butit is an interpretation without poetry or rhythm, occasionally cashingin on multi-syllabic, Scrabble-winning words in a misguided attempt tomake its characters look rebelliously intellectual.

"The Hours" is an Oscar voter's nightmare. An adaptation of Michael Cunningham's novel about three women in three different time periods whose lives are profoundly affected by Virginia Woolf's "Mrs. Dalloway," the film features equally magnificent performances of nearly equal screen time from three of the best actresses working in film today.
Meryl Streep submerges herself in the self-sacrificing soul of Clarissa Vaughan, a modern Manhattan book editor whose longtime dear friend -- and volatile ex-lover -- Richard (Ed Harris) likes to ruffle her feathers by comparing her to the heroine of Woolf's book. Both women are externally serene, perfectionist party-throwers hiding deep reservoirs of regret over missed opportunities while living lives as mother-hen caretakers to others.
Julianne Moore plays Laura Brown, a fragile, pregnant 1950s housewife in the midst of reading "Mrs. Dalloway," whose deep depression (like Woolf's) and suicidal musings (like Dalloway's) go all but unnoticed by everyone except her young son (Jack Rovello), who clings to her apron strings with worry.
