Predators Review

OK
Stylish direction and an above-average cast help lift this noisy action sequel above the fray. But nothing can disguise the fact that it's also contrived, chaotic and ultimately pointless.

Eight people wake up in freefall as they drop into a mysterious jungle. It's clear that they've been carefully selected: the mercenary tough guy (Brody), brainy scientist (Grace), military hero (Braga), death-row maniac (Goggins), Russian fighter (Taktarov), Mexican brawler (Trejo), Yakuza killer (Changchien) and African warrior (Ali). And they soon realise that they're on some alien planet, acting as both prey and predators in some sick hunting game. Then they encounter a jittery nutcase (Fishburne) who has somehow eluded attack for several years.

Repo Men Review

Weak
This action movie misses the two big chances here: to play with the absurdities of its premise and to make a comment on corporate greed. Instead it's just brutally violent and staggeringly stupid.

Remy (Law) is a tough guy working with his childhood pal Jake (Whitaker) for The Union, a company that mercilessly repossesses artificial organs when people fail to make the payments. While their heartless boss (Schreiber) gleefully encourages their violent excesses, Remy's wife (van Houten) wants him to change to a desk job for the sake of their young son (Canterbury). Then there's an accident, and Remy becomes a client as well. So when he falls behind on his payments, he goes on the run with another renegade client (Braga).

Blindness Review

Bad
Fernando Meirelles' Blindness was adapted from the novel written by Portuguese Nobel-laureate Jose Saramago. The novel follows a singular woman who somehow goes uninfected when a sudden, freakish plague of "white blindness" strikes the planet, leaving her the sole witness to moral and sanitary decay and atrocities unmentionable in a prison for the infected. What was a poetic, exhaustively-brilliant piece of fiction has now become a clunky, clattering, ever-collapsing film of bludgeoning rhetoric.

The woman (Julianne Moore) tags along with her ophthalmologist husband (Mark Ruffalo) when he is struck by the blindness and sent to the initial holding facility for the infected. Visually plagued by random flashes of pure white, the film hams up Saramago's eloquent metaphor as the wards of the facility become factions. One splinter supports a dictator (Gael García Bernal) and an accountant (Maury Chaykin) who garner the entirety of the rations supplied by the army. Possessions and eventually women are traded for meager portions as the nameless woman begins to consider her tolerance in the face of a shadowy, violent orgy that even Argentine provocateur Gaspar Noé might find a little too much.

Redbelt Review

Excellent
David Mamet is a difficult guy to figure. His latest film, Redbelt, which he wrote and directed, is perhaps his most confounding project yet. That's not to say it's not enjoyable -- at its best, Redbelt is twisty, heady, butt-kicking fun -- but it's hard to recognize the writer of Glengarry Glen Ross as the man behind a film set in the mixed martial arts (MMA) subculture. Sure, the world of MMA fighting is fertile territory for Mamet's twin obsessions -- masculinity and domination -- but seriously... MMA? I've seen some MMA bouts in my day, and those guys don't look capable of speechifying the way Mamet's character's do. And yet somehow, in ways past reckoning, Redbelt manages to be pretty darn entertaining, even, in some parts, affecting.

Let me quickly establish some caveats. Redbelt is one of the most unapologetically macho movies made in the last several years, and the story ultimately buckles under the weight of its earnestness. The plot is constructed on the theme of warrior culture, personified by the lead character Mike Terry, played soulfully by Chiwetel Ejiofor (American Gangster, Dirty Pretty Things), who seems incapable of anything short of brilliance. Terry is a mixed martial arts instructor who lives his life by a code. His ethos is never really explained, but it clearly involves things like honor, integrity, and a bunch of other quiet, old-fashioned virtues most people don't think too much about. But Terry has a problem: Despite a loyal stable of disciples, his gym doesn't make any money and he has to do something to dig his way out of debt.

I Am Legend Review

Very Good
To the modern eye, the plot for the 1954 Richard Matheson novel I Am Legend might sound something like Cast Away with zombies. Truth be told, that's not a terrible premise, and Constantine director Francis Lawrence runs with it in this third film adaptation of the novel (and first to keep its title). Where he takes it may not always work, but he makes sure we enjoy the ride.

Will Smith plays Robert Neville, a virologist investigating a genetically engineered cure for cancer that has gone very, very wrong. With most of the world's population wiped out and a small remnant turned into ravenous, infected carriers, Neville ekes out a lonely existence with only a dog for company in the remains of New York City, hunting, foraging, and exploring by day and shutting himself in at night. The infected, as it turns out, are vulnerable to ultraviolet light.

Journey To The End Of The Night Review

OK
Despite the killer title (Journey to the End of the Night is the name of a nihilistic Celine book that has nothing to do with this film), this Brendan Fraser sex-and-drugs drama can't live up to its manufactured cool. The complicated relationships have Fraser as the scheming son of a brothel owner (Scott Glenn), who's trying to get out of the Sao Paolo slums via a big drug deal. Unfortunately we never much care for either Glenn or Fraser's characters, leaving the film in the hands of Mos Def, a dishwasher pressed into helping out. Most of the film is shot in the dark, it seems, in keeping with the coal-black mood of the entire affair.

Lower City Review

OK
Two guys on the ragged edge of poverty, a gorgeous young hooker who's sleeping with them both, what could go wrong? If this were all that the emotional, sweat-suffused Brazilian film Lower City was about, it would be the worst kind of tedium. But while first-time director Sérgio Machado brings more to the table than his skimpy script would warrant at first glance, what he adds is not quite enough to make this the explosive debut he no doubt was wishing for.

Machado was at least smart enough to make the object of his male stars' (and the camera's) attention fully able to deserve it, and then some. As 20-year-old Karinna, the ridiculously gorgeous Alice Braga shares her aunt Sonia's strong, sensual features and iconic aloofness; she's the center of attention in every scene whether she likes it or not, effortlessly drawing in everyone around her. Pity, of course, that the film had to take such an arresting actress and make her a whore. But that's just what Lower City is about: a young whore from a small Brazilian town who gets a cut rate on a ride on a boat to the big city of Salvador by agreeing to sleep with the two men piloting it.
