A Week In Movies: Oscars Too Close To Call, Lupita Rules The Red Carpet, Godzilla Crushes San Francisco, And Veronica Mars Is Back
Sunday's Academy Awards look like they may be the least predictable in years, although we know Lupita Nyong'o will wear the best frock. This week's new trailers offer a glimpse of Godzilla, a snappy return for Veronica Mars, and Michael Cera terrifying Juno Temple in Chile...
All eyes are on Hollywood this weekend as the Academy Awards take place this Sunday night. The least predictable Oscars in years, there are multiple possible winners in most of the major categories, as Gravity, 12 Years a Slave and American Hustle vie for Best Picture and Alfonso Cuaron and Steve McQueen contend for Best Director. We relive some of the the biggest upsets in Oscars history here.
Other too-close races include actor (Matthew Mcconaughey vs Chiwetel Ejiofor), supporting actor (Jared Leto vs Barkhad Abdi) and supporting actress (Lupita Nyong'o vs Jennifer Lawrence). The only sure thing is Cate Blanchett for Best Actress. And that Gravity will mop up all the technical awards. Here is more detail on the best supporting actress Oscar battle between jennifer lawrence and lupita nyong'o being too close to call.
Meanwhile, Lupita Nyong'o continues to wow fans with her striking red carpet style, pulling out a stunning bronze number for the Non-stop premiere in Los Angeles this week. People barely noticed that she was accompanied by co-stars Julianne Moore, Michelle Dockery and Liam Neeson. Or that she only says about 10 words in the film. Take a look over our article The Rising Star of Lupita Nyong'o: Film Star and Fashionista.
New trailers this week include a first look at Gareth Edwards' spectacularly reimagined Godzilla, which appears to return to the style of the Japanese films with an emphasis on humanity's inability to control the monster it created. Starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Bryan Cranston, Elizabeth Olsen, Juliette Binoche and Sally Hawkins, the film opens in May. Watch 'Godzilla' Trailer.
We also had a new trailer for Sebastian Silva's Magic Magic, which reunites the Chilean filmmaker with Crystal Fairy star Michael Cera for another disorienting, surreal road movie about Americans abroad. Juno Temple costars in the film, which appears to be a slow-burning, unconventional psychological horror. It opens in the UK in April. Watch 'Magic Magic' Trailer.
And finally, Warner Bros surprised us this week with both a trailer for the Veronica Mars movie and word that it will open globally in just two weeks on March 14th. The sassy comedy reunites Kristen Bell as the former teen sleuth who returns home for a murder investigation. Along with returning series regulars, the film includes cameos from the likes of Jamie Lee Curtis, James Franco and Justin Long. Watch 'Veronica Mars' Trailer.
