Alexander Skarsgard had a difficult period during the filming of 'The Legend of Tarzan', being forced to adhere to a strict diet and exercise routine in order to authentically portray Edgar Rice Burroughs' legendary jungle hero. But that won't stop girlfriend Alexa Chung ribbing him about it.

The model, who's been dating Skarsgård since 2015, took to Instagram this week to joke about her boyfriend's recent revelations to the press about the extent of calorie-counting and working-out he had to do to prepare for his role as Tarzan.

'I spent 6 months eating high protein meals 5 times a day and suffering through hefty regular workouts to prepare for this Instagram. Unclear what the other guy did', she told her followers alongside a shot of her posing with her teeth bared next to a poster of Skarsgård in 'The Legend of Tarzan'.

Last month, Alexander Skarsgård confessed that he had 'no fun for eight months' under his gruelling routine which comprised of eating 7,000 calories a day in lean proteins and simple carbs, skipping dairy products and sugary food, and weightlifting every day - even between takes, according to castmate Samuel L. Jackson.

'It was very important that Tarzan is flexible and agile when he moves through the jungle, and that he doesn't look like a body builder', he told People. 'So even though I wanted to put on some weight, the goal wasn't just to get buff. It was to look athletic.'

But could all this hard work have been in vain? Indeed, since 'The Legend of Tarzan' was released in the US on July 1st 2016, some of the reviews have not been kind. The film currently holds a Rotten Tomatoes score of 34% for the critics, but the audience was a little kinder with 73% having enjoyed the David Yates directed epic.
