Sony Pictures has announced two 'Amazing Spider-Man' spin-off films, 'Venom' and 'The Sinister Six'.
The movie studio is planning to expand its comic book franchise in a manner similar to Marvel's 'The Avengers' by announcing two movies focusing on the web-slinging hero's villainous foes.
Sony has hired five writers to work on the franchise, including the two spin-offs and the third and fourth instalments of 'Amazing Spider-Man'. The scribes include Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci, Jeff Pinkner, Ed Solomon and Drew Goddard. They will work with 'Amazing Spider-Man' producers Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach, as well as director Marc Webb, on the films.
Under their deals, Kurtzman, Orci and Pinkner have been hired to write 'The Amazing Spider-Man 3', which it is hoped Webb will return to direct.
Kurtzman and Orci will team up again, this time with Solomon joining them, to write 'Venom', which Kurtzman has been tapped to direct. Venom is one of Spider-Man's most famous villains and was previously portrayed on the big screen in 2007's 'Spider-Man 3' by Topher Grace.
Goddard will write and direct 'The Sinister Six', which will focus on the various villains in the 'Amazing Spider-Man' universe.
No release dates have been set for 'Venom' and 'The Sinister Six', but Sony previously confirmed the third and fourth 'Amazing Spider-Man' films will be released in 2016 and 2018, respectively, following the release of 'The Amazing Spider-Man 2' next year.
