The rocker was exhausted and "incredibly miserable" following the release of their 2009 album Tonight: Franz Ferdinand, so he called a meeting with bassist bandmate Bob Hardy to tell him he wanted to call it quits.
Kapranos tells The Observer, "I wanted to split the band up, because in my head it felt like one of those jobs... the ones I had to jack in. I didn't like the routine and the obligations. And whether those obligations lay with my contemporaries, my peers, my record label, the fans, the audiences - or maybe myself... I felt... It was time to... stop that."

Franz Ferdinand return this year with 'Right Thoughts, Right Words, Right Action.'
Glasgow rockers Franz Ferdinand have announced plans to release their fourth album Right Thoughts, Right Words, Right Action, through Domino Records on August 4, 2013. Frontman Alex Kapranos has made no secret of the band's intentions to release a new album in 2013 and now the details have been confirmed.
Recorded in London, Scotland and Scandinavia, the album is described as "The Intellect Vs The Soul, played out by some dumb band," by Kapranos himself. It was recently reported that Roxanne Clifford of Veronica Falls will feature as a guest vocalist on the album, though the album tracklisting doesn't appear to confirm this. The band debuted seven new songs at a tiny show at Glasgow's Nice N Sleazy recently, playing Treason! Animals, Right Thoughts, Right Words, Right Action and Fresh Strawberries.
The group will play various European festivals this summer, including Coke Live 2013 in Krakow, Pukkelpop 2013 in Hasselt-Kiewit and Frequency Festival in St Poelten before heading back to the Isle of Wight for Bestival.

The Take Me Out hitmaker wishes he could have passed away like the Sex Pistols rocker, who died of a drugs overdose aged 21 in 1979, while on bail accused of murdering his girlfriend Nancy Spungen.
But Kapranos, 37, hadn't even managed to secure a record deal at the milestone age.
He says, "I wanted to be like Buddy Holly or Sid Vicious or Rupert Brooke and have achieved everything I was going to do and done it all by the time I was 21 and then die glamorously. Unfortunately, it didn't happen like that."

Kapranos explains, "I had a really horrible experience a couple of years ago. Some crazy stalker fan got access to some really personal details of my life.
"The idea that there are people who aren't just satisfied with listening to the music - that they want to suck out the very essence of my soul, like some vampire - made me want to withdraw further."
