Alex James was ''the most annoying member'' of Blur.

The bass player admits tensions in the 'Song 2' band could flare up in their 90s heyday, leading to him getting into scrapes with his bandmates.

He said: ''There was one time when I had two black eyes and a headbutt in between. I think I was the most annoying!

''The main talent for a bass player is the haircut and turning up on time. When I look back, I can see that it was no way to run a business but there was also real joy for all of us in playing music and that somehow ironed out all the fights.''

The band were inactive between 2001 and 2008 but have since played live and released a handful of new tracks. They are also performing at a special concert to close the Olympics in August and singer Damon Albarn - who completes the band, alongside guitarist Graham Coxon and drummer Dave Rowntree -

thinks tensions between members when they were at their peak was a good thing creatively.

He added: ''I realise that what always felt like monumental problems for us weren't actually so bad. Without tensions, I'm sure we'd have been less creative. It's not meant to be an easy ride. I think other bands like The Stone Roses and Oasis have similar stories because it becomes such a pressure cooker.''
