Harry Hole is an experienced detective who comes across one of the strangest murder cases he's ever seen. A man calling himself the Snowman Killer is killing women, and he and his team need to work out his motive in order to catch him. The clues are in the extent of the mutilations and the appearance of one of the victims' pink scarf, but they'll need more than that to beat this crazed psychopath at his own game. As winter continues to breathe its icy breath, the hunt gets more and more challenging. But when they manage to connect the killings to an old cold case, they decide to lure him out using a new recruit as bait.

Five friends are hiking in the wilderness when they discover a young girl, Anna (Boyd), buried in a box. The most adept climbers (George and Newman) go for help following a shortcut that involves a dangerous descent, while the others (Speleers, Magowan and Sweeney) take Anna on a safer route. But they're being chased by a pair of merciless killers (Harris and McCole) who need to get Anna back so they can collect ransom money from a shady Eastern European (Roden).
And as things turn very violent, everyone gets increasingly desperate to survive.

So someone in the Sci-Fi Channel marketing department thought that they'd be able to create the definitive version of the novel, making much ballyhoo over it in the press. "This is the way Frank Herbert intended it!" Yes, yes, I'm sure he was precisely thinking of static, made-for-television sets lifted from Star Trek: The Next Generation, bathed in nauseating greens, oranges, and fire engine reds.
