Thursday Review

OK
A definite sleeper, not for the faint of heart. Thursday features 24 hours in the life of a reformed drug dealer, who has been trying to put his life in order for the last four years. When his old partner rolls into town and drops a load of smack in his L.A. house, all manner of nefarious sorts stop by to collect it. Body count ensues, plus Paulina Porizkova in (and out of) a red, rubber dress. I'll buy that for a dollar.

Woman on Top Review

Grim
Once in a very great while a motion picture comes along to captivate the minds and spirits of audiences everywhere, magically suspending disbelief in all who witness it. And, though it tries earnestly, Woman on Top is not that picture.

I love movies. In particular, I hunger for films that invite me into a world beyond the limits of mundane, material, daily existence. While Woman on Top deserves some credit for its fresh, innocent effort to make this invitation, it is disappointingly infantile once we all get to the party.

'Til There Was You Review

Weak
A cute idea with questionable delivery, 'Til There Was You is a romantic comedy for the very patient among us. Clocking in at almost two hours, my biggest complaint is the desperate need for some cut-cut-cutting -- editing which would have made the film a much more enjoyable experience. It's a cute idea: Gwen (Jeanne Tripplehorn) and Nick (Dylan McDermott) are meant for each other, but they never seem to cross paths. Also in the picture is Francesca (Sarah Jessica Parker), a now-grown-up child actress who ends up being the catalyst that inevitably brings the couple together. Written by My So-Called Life scribe Winnie Holzman, the story is absolutely dripping in the expected melodramatics and sentimentality -- but that's not necessarily bad. It's just that when you combine the film's tedious length with questionable casting decisions (Parker disappoints, & Jennifer Aniston plays a surgeon(!?)) you get a fine mess that eventually redeems itself... just not all the way.
