Rocker Tom Gabel from Against Me! has come out as transgender in an interview with Rolling Stone magazine. Gabel reveals "Growing up, my experience with transsexualism was nothing but shame" and is hoping that now "People will understand, and [I hope] they'll be fairly kind."

The singer will soon begin the medical aspects of gender reassignment including electrolysis treatments and taking female hormones. Gabel mentions also considering gender reassignment surgery.

31-year-old Gabel is planning to take the name Laura Jane Grace but, since the singer is not attracted to men, will remain married to wife Heather who has shown tremendous support for the rocker despite Gabel's initial apprehensions. "For me, the most terrifying thing about this was how she would accept the news," says Gabel. "But she's been super-amazing and understanding."

There were clues to Gabel's predicament in Against Me!'s 2007 album 'New Wave'; more specifically in the song 'The Ocean' where the lyrics state "If I could have chosen, I would have been born a woman / My mother once told me she would have named me Laura". Gabel has written a new song called 'Transgender Dysphoria Blues'.

The future of Against Me! is still unclear. Gabel's full story about his transformation can be found in the latest issue of Rolling Stone magazine.
