Aerosmith unveiled their first new single in six years during a spot on the American Idol finale on Wednesday evening (May 23, 2012). Steven Tyler and company played their rocking new tune 'Legendary Child' before delighting the live audience with a rendition of their smash hit 'Walk This Way'.

It was the band's long-awaited first appearance on the show since Tyler became a judge in 2010. Speaking with Rolling Stone magazine earlier this month, guitarist Joe Perry said his early reluctance to appear on the show stemmed from his shock that Steven had joined the family-friendly programme. He said Tyler made the announcement while the band were on tour, saying, "It's not about the show, it's about how we found out about it.It was a bit of a shock and it took us off balance". However, the group appear to have patched up their differences since and 'Legendary Child' is the first single from Aerosmith's new album 'Music From Another Dimension', due out on August 28, 2012. In the same interview, Perry said, "I've been wanting this record to come out for years, but there's a reason for everything and the timing for this is just right".

Tyler gushed over the record on the Idol finale, saying, "Your album is like a wave, and you ride that album all the way and see what you got. Hopefully we have three or four deep, which means radio play . . . Jack Douglass and I and Joe . . . we worked this thing for the last year, and we're so happy about it".
