OSCAR-winning actor Adrien Brody rushed to console his mother at the offices of New York paper THE VILLAGE VOICE last week (ends18JUN04), after she was made redundant.

The kind-hearted star of The Pianist hurried to collect SYLVIA PLACHY - a highly-regarded photographer at the publication - after she found out the upsetting news.

A co-worker for Plachy, 61, says, "She has to be shattered."
