Despite only being released last month, Adele’s 25 is 2015’s biggest album. In its first week of sales alone the album managed to shift an incredible 3.38 million copies in the US. But the album’s massive success may have been helped by the singer’s decision to keep it off Spotify, something which she explained during her Time magazine cover story.

“I don’t use streaming,” Adele told Time. “I buy my music. I download it, and I buy a physical [copy] just to make up for the fact that someone else somewhere isn’t. It’s a bit disposable, streaming. I know that streaming music is the future, but it’s not the only way to consume music.”

Adele added that she believes “music should be an event,” though who knows if 25 may hit Spotify sometime next year. Another artist who made the decision to keep her music off Spotify this year was Taylor Swift, causing the two to often be paired together.

Speaking about Swift’s open letter to Apple earlier this year which asked them to change their policies on how artists were compensated, Adele said: “It was amazing. I love her—how powerful she is. We’ll get lumped together now because of it, but I think we would both feel the ability to say yes or no to things even if we weren’t successful.”

Adele also believes that things are moving too fast in the modern world and it’s time to slow down. “The speed with which we discover and get over things is too fast,” she added. “I’m frightened that I’m not going to be able to relate to my kid.”
