The UK's hopes for next year's (FEB05) Oscars have been given a boost, after eight British actors picked Golden Globe nominations yesterday (13DEC04).

English stars Imelda Staunton, Joely Richardson, Kate Winslet, Clive Owen, Ian McShane, Miranda Richardson, Patrick Stewart and Emily Watson are hoping to follow in the footsteps of British comedian Ricky Gervais, who won Best Comedy Actor and Best Comedy Show for his hit TV sitcom The Office at last year's (03) ceremony.

Staunton is the favourite for the Best Actress gong for her part in MIKE LEIGH's controversial abortion movie Vera Drake, and Winslet is expected to scoop her first OSCAR for romance Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

Staunton says, "The awards are a bonus. But this isn't a time in my life when my head is going to spin. I can stay level headed."
