Seeming to confirm that television viewers wish to see more hard news presented in their nightly news programs and less celebrity-oriented features, a new study released Wednesday indicated that 71 percent of the public approves the extensive TV coverage of the Haitian earthquake disaster. The study, conducted on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week by Flemington, NJ-based HCD Research, also found that 78 percent of the public thinks that there was to much media coverage of Michael Jackson's death last July. In a statement, Glenn Kessler, president and CEO of HCD Research, said, "The stark difference in viewers' perceptions of the Jackson coverage and other major news events suggests that there may be a limit regarding news and entertainment strategies." Last week's network news ratings from Nielsen Media Research seemed to corroborate the findings. The total audience for the NBC, ABC and CBS nightly newscasts averaged 25.57 million, up 18 percent from last year's average of 21,64 million.
